This poem was written for a friend many years ago as they were waiting for their 2nd set of confirming test results for Aids. One phone call from their doctor turned their world upside down as they knew it. I didn't know what to say at the time and that evening this poem resulted and I gave it to them the next day. They eventually had good news several weeks later and they were not positive afterall. They still carried this poem with them for a long time as their perspective of life had changed. LIFE Life; a winding, twisted streak in time. Full of open meadows and dark lengthy tunnels; high mountains and sunken valleys. But to every beginning there is an end; and in return, every end starts a new beginning. For life continues in many directions; it holds endless paths to be followed and new ones to be formed. To stand still and not challenge and question is to truly die. For challenge constitutes change, and change bears experience, and experience is the result of living.
To live is to accept change, but never to be defeated by the result. To hold that which is dear to us, but never so tightly that it cannot grow, and we are left grasping only memories. Change must never be stopped, and also much never be accepted with so much totality that it cannot be modified again. If change brings the unwanted remember: through every darkened tunnel there is light at the end and every sunken valley is formed by a towering mountain. To live is to walk equally through them all. To accept the challenge of the unexpected curves in life with exploring curiosity but to know that if you only begin searching for that mountain or that light you will find it. You may not see it from where you stand, it may be so distant that you cannot believe in its existence, but if you will continue searching, change will come again.
And if change leaves you on the highest mountain or in the most beautiful light, remember that this too is only temporary. For again all beginnings have an end and in return everything starts a new beginning. Life is only what you make of it, change is only a result of it, but challenge is that which defines it.
